With a population of 62 000, Lorient is a maritime city situated south-east of Quimper and west-south of Paris, belonging to the Morbihan department in Brittany. Its immense natural port, strategically located at the junction of the rivers Scorff, Ter and Blavet is protected from the ocean by the Ile de Groix.
